2 weeks of holidays begin today.
Off to Purley, Saffron Walden, Nottingham and York. It will be good to catch up with family and friends, put my feet up for a few days and get a well earned rest. Not exactly pipe and slippers, but I haven't retired.
Public transport is going to be a joy (I tell myself). The benefits do bring an opportunity to read, listen to music and a limited amount of relaxation.
The relaxation largely depends on your travelling companions. Not necessarily the people that you know, as for most of the journeys it is me on my todd, but those wonderful people around you.
People watching is a great thing, apart from when people watching becomes people listening.
People listening is ...
... suffering other people's music - usually through the edges of others headphones - oh their poor ears
... that crying child
... train carriage domestic
and the more common than not mobile phone conversation. This is often made worse by it being the 'silent' carriage.
Anyway, let's not complain all the way, sometimes it is possible to get a good value fare, and on the less busy trains you can grab several seats.
